News from Zion Lutheran
Church
From Our Associate Pastor
Have you
heard…? Carl
Lindokken, our congregation President, recently talked with us in worship about
the importance of communication. He said that it’s a vital key to the health and
effectiveness of any organization and at Zion we provide a number of
opportunities for members to connect with our ministries. We publish the
Tidings Newsletter; we provide announcements in each week’s worship
bulletin; and Zion Council material is available each month. These are all good
ways for you to connect with Zion Lutheran Church.
I want to
communicate something to you in this article. It’s not a new topic, but I think
that it’s time for me to reintroduce you to “PoWeR SuRGe: the Six Marks of
Discipleship.” We have been talking about these core spiritual practices for two
years and they are making a difference for members who have begun to practice
some or all of them. These practices are tools that strengthen our faith and
encourage us to put our faith into concrete, meaningful action.
The Six Marks of Discipleship are Prayer; Worship;
Reading scripture; Serving; being in Relationship with God
and others; and Giving of our time, talents, and financial resources.
The
acronym PWR SRG is an easy to remember method for learning about these
practices.
If you
choose to use any one of these tools, you will give more time and attention to
your faith life, and you will become more aware of God’s presence in your life.
We
provide Daily Devotions
that may be used for your daily practices of prayer and reading scripture. You
can find these on the back page of your worship bulletin and also as a link on
the Zion web site. Use them to help you practice the marks of prayer and reading
scripture. Make worship a consistent weekly habit and receive the blessings of
time spent keeping the Sabbath.
The
Marks that are in PoWeR, provide the inspiration that will lead you to SuRGe.
Serving, being in relationship, and giving are about putting your faith into
action. The pastors and Church Council members of Zion want you to be involved
in ministry. There are so many ways that you can do this at Zion and even more
ways that you can live out your faith beyond Zion’s walls. But unless you give
some time and thought to “surging” these opportunities may escape your notice in
the busyness of your life. Don’t wait to be asked to serve, just volunteer!
So,
here’s an invitation for you. After you’ve read this article; ask someone at
Zion if they’ve heard about PoWeR SuRGe. If they haven’t, then please tell them
what it’s all about. If they do know about them, ask which of the Six Marks they
practice, and then share your own practices too. Tell your friends about PoWeR
SuRGe—communication is an important part of all relationships and organizations.
Our
Lord God, is the great communicator; and in Christ and the Holy Spirit, God’s
Word is loud and clear. Hear it, do it, and share it.
Blessings and peace, Pastor Linda Covey
